Introduction
This bilingual booklet was designed with clarity and style in mind. Hand lettering was created for the cover, and typefaces were chosen based on their architectural influences, and their modern style.
My focus in this design was to create an aestheticly pleasing layout that would include 2 languages without having them compete visually. French and English are both given subtle differences to allow the reader to quickly pick out the sections dedicated to them. The differences are big enough to spot, but to not cause a distraction for those reading the other language.
Layout
A modular design that would allow for different length texts and different sized images to fit in a dynamic way.
With French text tending to be longer than English in character length, it was importqant to build in this extra space. This modular design allows additions to be made a simple task.
Process
This project was born out of a previous project. A poster design featuring the quote: “War is what happens when language fails” -Margaret Atwood.
This poster features hand lettering to spell out the word "WAR". The style of the lettering is inspired by brutalist architecture. Grey paper was used to emulate the concrete/metal look. The hand lettering is based off of Akzidenz-Grotesk, because of how it was made popular during the time that brutalist architecture emerged.
The soulless mechanical feel of the typeface lends itself perfectly to the topic of the quote. To contrast this, I used Noe Display Italics (Schick and Toikka) for the quote. I could have used typefaces like Caslon italics, or garamond Italics, however these italics were too soft appearing. Noe display italics still includes some geometric accents making it more suitable to the architectural shape of the hand lettering.
